Why Millennials Have Low Divorce Rates

Millennials make up one the fastest growing demographics in Salt Lake City. While there is an old saying that “youth is wasted on the young”, perhaps there is much that older couples can learn from young people. Millennials are defined as anyone born after 1990. Although the nation’s divorce rate peaked in the 1970s, it has slowly decreased since the 1980s. Millennials statistically have the lowest divorce rate all demographics in Salt Lake City as well as throughout the nation with 40 percent.  But what is the reason for this phenomenon?

More People Waiting Longer to Get Married

There has been debate whether the institution of marriage is on the decline. It depends on who you speak to. During the 1970s the divorce rate in the United States was at nearly 50 percent. But what is often forgotten are the children and even the grandchildren who are the products of those divorces. Many are all grown and have families of their own.  One noticeable trend is millennials are waiting longer than previous generations to tie the knot. They also tend to be more selective when it comes birth control and having children. According to various studies and surveys, money is less of a contributing factor, due to more women in the work force. In many cases, women have become the breadwinners in more households.

Less Religious Pressure

The Mormon faith remains the predominant religion in Salt Lake City. However, more young people are placing less emphasis on their religious views. Fewer than 6 in every 10 millennials identify themselves with any form of Christianity, compared to 7 of 10 people in previous generations. Because there has always been a close link between marriage and religion, it may explain why millennials are getting married.

The Rise of Dating Apps

The days of meeting people at singles bars and social events are not completely over. But changes in technology are now dictating on how younger couples meet. Internet dating became the rage in the early 2000s. But now the Digital Age and mobile technology has brought dating apps to the forefront. Meeting people in person has quickly been replaced by swiping your phone screen to the left.  With more dating options, many millennials are choosing to have fun in the dating scene rather than settle down.

The Stigma of Older Single Women

There was a time when it was frowned upon to be an older single woman. Nowadays, with more women concentrating on their careers and other professional pursuits, the idea of settling down and raising a family is no longer as big a priority.
