Utah may seem like a peaceful state that hardly makes the evening news. But it does have its share of violence. Here is a list of the most dangerous places in Utah according to a 2012 study.
- South Salt Lake
In 2012, South Salt Lake was reported as having the most violent crimes per capita in the state. Most of these violent crimes were murders – highest murder per capita. It also ranked second in property crimes.
- Salt Lake City
Salt Lake City had the second highest number of violent crimes, and the highest number of property crimes in 2012. It had the fourth highest murder rate per capita. Salt Lake City residents had a 1 in 12 chance of being the victim of a crime. Many Salt Lake City criminal defense attorneys took on full workloads with these numbers.
Even though a criminal defense attorney makes their living defending cases, no one openly wishes for crime. Ogden fared slightly better with third highest violent and property crimes per capita during this period. Residents stood a 1 in 20 chance of being the victim of a crime.
The list gets slightly better, with Washington having the eighth most violent crimes in Utah. But it also had the third most murders per capita, and the sixth highest number of property crime per capita.
In 2012, Toole had the fourth highest number of property crimes and fifth highest of violent crimes per capita. However, none of these violent crimes were murders, but they were robberies, assaults and sexual assaults.
- Brigham City
This city is known for more than just its LDS (Latter Day Saints) Temple. It had the fourth highest number of violent crimes per capita and the fifth highest of property crimes. None of these crimes were murders. But criminal defense attorneys did have their hands full.
- Cedar City
Cedar City, in 2012, had the 14th highest number of property crimes in Utah, but it also had the fifth highest number of murders and the sixth highest number of violent crime per capita.
Sandy had the eighth highest number of murders and total crimes per capita. It was ninth in property crimes and 11th in violent crimes.
- West Jordan
This town only experienced two murders in 2012. It had the eighth most murders per capita that year, along with Sandy. It also had the ninth most violent crimes in the state.
In 2012, this small town had the second most murders per capita in Utah, leaving criminal defense attorneys pretty busy. It ranked 22nd in violent crimes, however. But it still had a high number of property crimes with the eighth highest; and the ninth highest total crimes rate in Utah.
